Barred Plymouth Rock vs. Speckled Sussex Chickens

Our quest for the perfect small homestead chicken continues. Late last spring, we purchased both Barred Plymouth Rock and Speckled Sussex Chicks. The two breeds have grown well, though the Rocks are just a wee bit larger. Now, the Barred Rocks have definitely taken the lead by being the first to begin laying. I hope they will continue to lay right through the winter months.

The Speckled Sussex may well shine in other categories so it is still too soon to tell which breed we will ultimately choose. Right now, though, the Barred Rocks are in the lead!
