Geese were not the first animals that came to mind when we started our search for the ideal mix of small homestead livestock. While, goats, pigs, and chickens were at the top of our list - geese weren't on the list at all.

Fortunately for us, a fellow farmer was always singing the praises of her homestead geese.

This got my attention and we invested in a small flock of mixed breed geese for our homestead. They peacefully co-existed with the other livestock and were gorgeous when foraging through the pastures.

After roasting our first goose and rendering the fat for cooking, we were greatly impressed with the flavor of the meat and rendered fat. Right then and there we decided that geese were going to be an important part of our homestead livestock menagerie.

And so our quest for the perfect homestead goose began. We kept the mixed breed flock and added Sebastapol Geese. Later that year we added American Blues and Saddleback Pomeranians. The blues were poor parents and squished the few offspring they were able to hatch so they were sold. The Saddlebacks were sold in June, 2018 to make room for the new Cotton Patch Geese.
